Boat Flounder Fishing Techniques
On very calm days, casting lures into surf waters, and bringing them in slowly can work well. Try jigs or saltwater jerkbaits meant for inshore fishing.
"Doormat" flounder are essentially trophy fish that weigh several pounds, and are, in size, nearing the proportions of a household doormat. To catch fish such as these, it can be productive to target near shore structure just off of the coast, or deep holes in sounds. Fishing with large bucktail jigs, and retrieving them as if they were grubs, or angling with live mullet often works for doormats.
Flounder are flatfish that are common in inshore waters around the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts of the United States. There are many ways to fish for these tasty gamefish, and various angling strategies are productive at different times and in different scenarios. Surf Fishing for Flounder Techniques
Fish large bucktail jigs, in colors such as white, red and white, chartreuse and white, and yellow in white air max 97, or in colors recommended by inshore fishing guides, slowly. Work the same waters over and over, making sure that the lure reaches the bottom each time, as it can take several casts for these big flatfish to notice and engulf the jig. Cast whatever baits are hot, or cheap jordan 7, if little is known, try fishing standard Got-Cha grubs on jigheads. Use bright colors if the water is stirred up well, or if the the sky is overcast, and on bright days with clear water, try using dully colored grubs on darker jigheads. Cast out, and slowly retrieve these lures with high rod twitches, and slow reeling of the slack line, causing the grubs to swim up, and then drop back down to the bottom, all of the way back in. This motion will attract the attention of any flounder feeding in the area.
If using a boat to fish, try to find out what flounder are hitting best, and the general areas in which they can be found. Often, they strike certain lures and baits at certain times, so casting what works can increase success greatly. Ask any inshore fishing guide working out of nearby marinas what baits are hot, and fish accordingly.
Basic techniques that work well include inlet fishing. Anchor in calm parts of inlets during changing tides, set out baits, and cast lures. If baits on flounder fishing rigs are constantly being stripped off or attracting unwanted feeders such as sharks, rays, pinfish, and lizardfish, which can happen, as many fish cruise inlets during incoming or outgoing tides, try pulling them up and fishing only with artificial lures.
Bait can be squid, cut fish, such as mullet or menhaden, and shrimp. Flounder will happily accept any of these. Casting to holes near the shore, easily identified by overlapping waves in the surf is a great flounder fishing technique. Check the bait regularly, to make sure that other creatures or waves have not removed it from the bottom rig hooks.
Surf fishing is a fairly basic way to angle for flounder. A bottom rig, some bait, and a surf rod and reel equipped with quality line are the supplies. Specialized flounder rigs work very well, especially on calmer days.
