Traditionally, men and women wore an eclectic range of adornments including heavy brass and bronze armbands and anklets, flamboyant earrings, and torques, as well as tribal jewellery decorated with semi-precious stones. Polished cornelian beads, particularly red ones puma espera, were favored by women and seen as a status symbol. The Naga also traded for large shells on which they etched out intricate designs and hung from their necks.
Textiles are woven and embroidered exclusively by women and both hemp and cotton are used to make Naga blankets and shawls. They are woven on hand looms, using the back-strap method and embroidery is done using a porcupine needle. Natural dyes are made using plant extracts including indigo, jackfruit, and mahogany and provide an enchanting, natural quality. Unlike chemical dyes, fading occurs quite fast with exposure to the sun.
The Naga garnered a reputation for being strongly independent and fierce in battle during conflicts with the British in India during the 19th century. The Naga were for a long time known to be head hunters and the blankets that men wore, known as warrior blankets, would indicate the number of kills made in battle.
A rich tradition of textile weaving is an integral aspect of Naga culture. Textiles adorned with various tribal designs indicate social status Puma First Round RP, wealth, and tribal belonging. The practice of head hunting has now ceased and so has the use of the head-hunter’s motif.
The past few decades have seen a lot of change within Naga society. Exposure to Baptist missionaries has led to an erosion of ancient traditions, languages and belief systems. In fact, the Baptists have been so successful that it is estimated that today about 90% of Naga are Baptist Christians. Pressures to ‘modernize’ have seen a significant disintegration of cultural identity and new lines of division between tribes have formed.

The Naga have a long tradition of hand crafting exotic adornments Puma Boots, weapons and textiles resplendent with deeply symbolic motifs and tribal designs. With over a dozen distinct tribes and as many mutually incomprehensible languages, the various Naga tribes have produced a broad symbolic vocabulary for artistic expression. Early history of the Naga is scant. Reference to a people thought to be the ancestors of the present day Naga is found in ancient Sanskrit records, describing fierce inhabitants of a sub-Himalayan region with golden skin, related to the Mongoloid Tibeto-Burmans.
Naga Identity and the Tradition of Textile Weaving
One tradition that has survived is that of making impressive textiles. The Naga women are still weaving marvellous textiles and in the process providing an income for their families. While patterns and motifs recur in the overall design, no two pieces are identical. Rich in symbolism and possessing an enigmatic primal quality, Naga textiles make impressive wall art and runners.
