The Hornbill Festival (in the Indian state of Nagaland) begins in the first week of each December and lasts up to 4 days. It takes location in the chief battlefield of the Naga Heritage Village complicated, Kisama (some thirty-odd kilometres outside of Kohima Town, the state capital of Nagaland).
Importance of the Hornbill Festival
For interstate and exotic observers, barefoot running, its a colourful, vibrant presentation to this still-unknown tribal culture. Nagaland, and the additional six states in India's North-East, has remained somewhat of a restricted zone for Indian and multinational travellers. It is only in the last few decades namely the Central administration has relaxed these restrictions, in feedback to the progressive peace negotiations among it and the guerrilla teams. This has allowed extra passengers to come in and explore Nagaland, barefoot running shoes, and their first stop is usually the Hornbill Festival, where they encounter in alive colour the folk of the Naga Hills.
So by contrast, the festival represents a opportunity for all Nagas to appreciative their culture as a whole, and to penetrate its worth to their sense of an ethnic identity.
India is prominent for its cultural and religious festivals, like Holi (the festival of colours) and Diwali,(the festival of lights). These festivals have great religious significance for its participants.
For the Nagas, the festival namely a meaningful reminder of their tribal customs and stories. Ruled by British and later, Indian commanders and converted to Christianity by American Baptist alternatively Jesuit missionaries, Naga tribes have since struggled apt preserve their pre-Christian mores and personality. Their modern political history has been damaged by separatist insurgency, Indian naval rule and inter-tribal conflicts.
Likewise, the Hornbill Festival has excellent cultural significance. The festival is labeled behind the hornbill bird, a bird which has featured in numerous Naga fables and folktales. But there's a greater reason as its significance.
Here, troupes of dancers and actors from the major Naga tribes come together to put on folk discos, combat dances, barefoot shoes, folk melodies and enactments of folk anecdotes, tribal games and sports
