Obsorne then accused the government of electioneering over its spending plans and not living in economic reality and that cuts would have to be made quickly as the next election is almost certain to take place in the next financial year.
Although he maintained that frontline services in the NHS and Schools would be protected and that the necessary cuts would not affect the social fabric.
Although there was better news for the Prime Minister as the Populus poll also said that 41% of those asked thought he was the best leader that Labour could have at the moment and amongst Labour voters in the survey 71% thought he should lead his party into the next election.
He warned that there would now have to be the biggest spending cuts for 20 years to cope with the public debt which he stated in last month's pre-budget report would peak at around 78 per cent of GDP in the financial year 2014/15.
“You've had one of the biggest shocks to the system for a long, long time. It's not something that you can just pick yourself up from and walk away as if nothing has happened. But I am confident."
He also continued his attack on the Conservatives on their zeal to make the cuts earlier that he believes is necessary which he argues would choke the recovery which he said would be 'moderate'.
Shadow Chancellor George Osborne pledged that he would make spending cuts within weeks if the Conservatives won the next election reiterating the Tories’ commitment to reducing the public debt.
The official figures for Q4 will be published on January 26 and could be influential in deciding how the election campaign will be fought.
Although they warned that there were still some negative national indicators that could harm growth and backed Darling’s claim that the recovery would be tentative.

Both surveys were carried out last weekend after the attempted coup to topple Gordon Brown.
In an exclusive interview in the he said:"I'm always cautious about these things. But in December there were encouraging signs for the retail sales figures and car registrations are up.”
