porousabsorbing and being absorbed into Buddhismpopular
religionand now the Western intellectual tradition.
The greatest danger posed by the absorption of the Dao into the
Western tradition is that the text becomes subject to reinterpreta-
tion in a purely individualistic and intellectual way. In contrast
within the Chinese Daoist traditionthe
Daode jinghas always
been interpreted by reference to the functioning of the body
whether construed as the body of the individual or the body of the
community. The continuous process of reinterpretation of the
Daode jinghas up to now been a somaticas well as intellectual

the body will be continued in modern Western interpretations
