The National Archives has published a research guide which describes the different intelligence sections of security departments. Available from the bookshop is the Secret Agent's Handbook of Special Devices WWII, an illustrated catalogue of devices and weapons used by Special Operations Executives during the Second World War.

The Security Service, known as MI5, deals with intelligence operations involving threats to national security, such as terrorism and espionage. Security documents that are released and can be downloaded for a fee include personal files of suspected agents (Communists, Soviet and German Intelligence agents) from 1939 to 1945.
The Secret Intelligence Service, known as MI6, was founded in 1909 and was involved in intelligence operations overseas. Documents in the UK National Archives that are available to download for a fee include files pertaining to German espionage intelligence before and during WWII, and records of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Those under surveillance included the Communist Party of Great Britain security manager, Betty Reid; the Scottish nationalist poet Hugh MacDiarmid; the American writer Ernestine Evans; Austrian composer Hanns Eisler; Eric Blair (alias George Orwell ) and Ezra Pound. Their security files comprise important historical records of a troubled period in history.

Personal files of persons suspected by the MI6 included those of writer Arthur Ransome, author of Swallows and Amazons [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], singer James and Scottish Communist MP William Gallagher.
The UK National Archives website has an excellent guide to resources with introduction and highlights of the most important secret documents releases. Brief biographies of famous spies or suspected spies are provided and the visitor can simply go intelligence online shopping: the site features detailed descriptions of "products" or files and prices of each.
