This route to climb Seat Sandal from Dunmail Raise is a total of 3 miles with 600 meters of ascent and descent.
From Grasmere in the heart of the Lake District National Park, the Lake District fell of Seat Sandal dominates the view to the east of Dunmail Raise. Seat Sandal can be ascended by a variety of routes, but when climbed from the pass a short half day on the fells rewards the walker with what, in clear conditions, is a spectacular viewpoint.
Fell Walking Lake District
A Lake District Fell the Summit of Seat Sandal
Whilst in the village [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], those interested in Lake District history may wish to visit the Wordsworth graves which are in the graveyard of St Oswold's church.
The name Seat Sandal comes from the Norse meaning Sandulf’s summer pasture and the fell's summit is indeed a flat grassy plateau. The near views are dominated by Seat Sandal's illustrious neighbours, Fairfield, St Sunday Crag and Dollywaggon pike, but as a Lakeland fell central in the Lake District National Park the views on the western side of Dunmail Raise take in the fells as far away as Great Gable, a truly stunning viewpoint.
Weather conditions can change quickly and dramatically in the Lake District. When setting out for any walk on the fells the walker should be well equipped with appropriate clothing and should carry a map and compass and know how to use them.
The descent may be made by retracing the ascent route. Alternatively follow the ridge westwards to the cairn then bear north west to descend the flank of the mountain and return direct to Dunmail Raise. The gradient is easy at first, but steepens as the pass is neared.
Dunmail Raise, a Site in Lake District History
From Grisedale Tarn the summit of Seat Sandal may either be attained directly or a contour path followed to Grisedale Hause [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the col between Seat Sandal and Fairfield, and then an ascent made following the fell wall.
In 945 AD the pass was the site of a battle between Dunmail the last King of Cumbria and Edmund I the Saxon King of England. Folklore has it that Dunmail was killed and buried under the prominent cairn at the summit of the pass. His warriors escaped with his crown and threw it into Grisedale Tarn to prevent the Saxon's from flaunting it. However another version of the story has Dunmail escaping into exile to Rome.
From Dunmail Raise a path is followed along the bank of the Raise Beck. Height is gained steadily as the path rises 300m until Grisedale Tarn comes into sight.
Grisedale Tarn is another site important in Lake District history as this is the location of the Brothers Parting Stone, the spot where William Wordsworth saw his brother John for the final time on 5th Feb 1805. John was later lost on the East India ship the "Earl of Abergavenny" and to mark the spot of their parting in the 1880s one of William Wordsworth's poems was carved into the rock.
The village is also home to Heaton Cooper's art gallery, has an excellent small children's playground and public toilets which are situated in the main car park.
This route up Seat Sandal starts form the top of the Dunmail Raise pass [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the old boundary between Cumberland and Westmorland. Rising to a height of 240 m above sea level, the road pass links the towns of Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere with Keswick.
