The last cause is a build-up of algae. This is common during the spring. It’s known as “algae bloom”. If your pond is in direct sunlight then this increases the likelihood that you will have an algae bloom. There are two types of algae you can get: filamentous algae and planktonic algae.
Another idea is to provide some shade for the water. You can do this in one of two ways. The first is by actually putting plants in the water. A good rule is to have around 60-70% of your pond area covered. Certain plants will actually help oxygenate the water such as curly weeds (not as bad as they sound). The second way is to provide some shade by having plants around your pond.
If you’ve just set up your pond then the cause is likely a build-up of nitrates and ammonia. A healthy established pond will have bacteria in the water that will help to break down the ammonia and nitrates that are given off by the fish and waste material in the water. A new pond won’t have these helpful bacteria.
The first one, filamentous algae, will look like strings of green coming off the side of your pond. The other kind is called planktonic algae. If you have this kind of algae your water will look like pea soup. Another indication of excess algae will be that fish, if you have them [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will be near the surface gulping air. The reason algae causes problems is because it sucks up the oxygen in the water during the night.

How to Solve Cloudiness in Your Pond
A beautiful pond stocked with fish can be a great addition to your
So you’ve just put hours of work into building a beautiful natural looking pond in your yard and you can’t even see the bottom due to cloudiness, or you’ve had your pond up and running but now it looks like algae soup. There are few different causes for this problem.
There are some general things that you can do to help clear up your pond before you move on to chemicals or u.v. lights. Setting up some kind of moving water in the pond can help move the debris to your filter instead of just sitting stagnant. This can either be a pump that has an attachment for a fountain or building a small waterfall that flows into the pond.
The problem of excessive nitrates and ammonia can be diagnosed by taking a water sample. You can buy water sampling kits at any pet store. Your ph should be between 7.5 and 8.5. Your ammonia and nitrate level should be zero. If you find that your ammonia and nitrate levels are high you can buy an algaecide that will balance the level of ammonia and nitrates in the water.
Another cause can be over-feeding or over-stocking your fish. Many people worry that their fish don’t eat enough so they tend to over-feed.
As far as feeding your fish, you should only give your fish enough food that they can eat in five minutes. If after five minutes there is still food on the surface then it’s a good idea to cut back. Stocking your pond with fish you should generally use one inch of fish per ten gallons of pond. For example [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you have 400 gallons you could have any combination of fish totaling no more than 40 inches. However [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s better to have too few fish than too many.
Algae blooms can be solved a couple different ways that actually are best used in conjunction. First, as was mentioned earlier, cut back on the direct sunlight. The sun feeds the algae problem. Secondly, you can buy an ultra-violet pond clarifier. These mechanisms have a u.v. light that run as a go between from your pump to your filter. The light clumps the algae together to make it easier for your filter to catch the excessive algae.
