Accompanying the exhibition is a dynamic, interactive Web site that charts the history of Nazi propaganda by time period
Propaganda Enabled Rise of Nazism
Propaganda is biased information spread to shape public opinion and behavior. It combines truths with half-truths and outright lies. It simplifies complex ideas, plays on emotions, and cleverly targets desired audiences.
Propaganda posters were an important vehicle for these messages. A typical poster proclaimed, “Behind the Enemy Powers: The Jew.” An ugly caricature depicts a “Jewish financier” peering out from behind the British, American, and Soviet flags, implying Jewish manipulation of the Allied powers.
“Propaganda is a truly terrible weapon in the hands of an expert,” Adolf Hitler wrote in his political manifesto, Mein Kampf.
Motion pictures were another medium for antisemitism. The 1940 film Der ewige Jude (The Eternal or Wandering Jew) was directed by the head of the German Propaganda Ministry’s Film Division. Billed as a “documentary on world Jewry,” the film argued that the “parasitic Jewish race” was destroying German society.
The exhibition curators hope that “a deeper understanding of the complexities of the past may help us respond more effectively to today’s propaganda campaigns and biased messages.”
By 1932, the party had more than a million members, and by 1933 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Germany had become a one-party state under Nazi rule. The regime used mass rallies, music, posters [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], newspapers, and the new technologies of radio and film to glorify Hitler and promote the twisted vision of a “racially pure” Germany.
Nazi propaganda sought to incite German hatred of purported “enemies” of the nation — mainly Jews, but also Roma (Gypsies), homosexuals, Jehovah’s Witnesses, and the mentally and physically handicapped. Millions of ordinary Germans were persuaded to tolerate, or participate in, the mass murder of these groups and others in death camps throughout Europe. Propaganda was used to sell genocide.

German Jews in the 1930s
As early as 1919, as a defeated and humiliated Germany emerged from World War One, the Nazis began using propaganda to promote a vision of a strong, united nation. Propaganda helped transform the Nazis from an obscure right-wing group into the largest political party in Germany.
The Nazis were not the first to use political propaganda, nor were they the last. The Holocaust Museum exhibition raises important questions for contemporary societies. What are the connections between hateful words or images and hate violence? How can societies counter the pernicious influence of racist and war-mongering propaganda and still preserve the principle of free speech?
The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, is hosting a special exhibition that focuses on the Nazis’ extensive use of propaganda before and during World War Two.
The Nazis adopted the swastika, an ancient symbol, as their icon. Its striking design and dramatic colors of black [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], white, and red stirred voters’ emotions and gave the Nazi Party a clear visual identity.
“State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda” runs through December 2011. Entry is free, and no passes are required. The Holocaust Museum is located at 100 Raoul Wallenberg Place SW, Washington, DC, and is walking distance from the Smithsonian Metro station.
