English Heritage. "Tintagel Castle" (accessed February 9, 2010)
In 1999, Tintagel Castle was one of eighteen Cornish attractions under the care of English Heritage whose signs were stolen and defaced by members of the Cornish Stannary Parliament. The three men, Dr. Nigel Hicks [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rodney Nute, and Hugh Rowe, objected to the use of the word English in the signs. The men claimed that the English Heritage had no cultural legitimacy in Cornwall and demanded that the sites be maintained by a local body. The men were ordered to return the signs and pay £4,500 in damages to English Heritage.
Geoffrey of Monmouth, the 12th century British historian, claimed that Tintagel Castle was where the legendary king, Arthur, was conceived. In the 19th century, the poet Alfred Tennyson claimed the castle was the birthplace of Arthur. Later legends claim the castle was the home of King Mark and Queen Iseult of Cornwall, the aunt and uncle of Sir Tristan.
Tourist Attraction
The remains of Tintagel Castle are located on a peninsula near the village of Tintagel in Cornwall, England. The site was originally a Roman settlement, one of the few in Cornwall. Coins and pottery fragments date to the third or fourth century. After the Romans left England, the Celts built a fortress on the site that was possibly used as a summer residence for the rulers of Cornwall. Between 400 and 700 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it was a Cornish royal stronghold. More Mediterranean pottery has been found in Tintagel than any other British site.

Days Out in Cornwall: Boscastle and Tintagel
In 1233 Richard Earl of Cornwall built a castle at Tintagel to establish a connection with legend of King Arthur. The castle was built in a style that appeared ancient, but held no strategic value. Richard built the castle in an attempt to gain the Cornish people’s trust. After Richard’s death, the castle was left to the county sheriff. The castle was used as a prison and the land as pasture. As it fell into disrepair, the roof of the Great Hall was removed in the 1330s. Over time, the castle slowly became ruins.

Controversy
The castle ruins became a tourist attraction during the Victorian era when the Arthurian legend became popular. Today Tintagel Castle is owned by Prince Charles, who is the Duke of Cornwall. At some point [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], care of the castle was transferred to English Heritage, but the exact date is unknown.
