It doesn't require camping in a forest to spot animals. It's possible to see possum, bats, deer, rabbits, owls and other critters in a residential neighborhood.
Another good resource is getting checklists and asking specialists at outdoor retailers such as REI, Gander Mountain or Cabela’s.
Camping 101
Families can check the National Wildlife Federation’s web site for each year’s dates and details. The next Great American Backyard Campout will be Saturday, June 26 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2010. This extensive site includes how-to videos, coloring pages [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], campfire songs, games and checklists that can help families pack, prepare and successfully pitch a tent. Local parks and recreation programs or state parks may have similar programs, which are worth checking out.
Whether you tackle a full-fledged camping trip or ease into it with backyard forts, the key is to unplug, reconnect with each other and tune into nature.
Here are a few more tips for success.

A screened bug catcher (decorate-it-yourself bug catchers can sometimes be found at craft stores) or jars with vented lids are great for collecting lightening bugs, moths and other nocturnal insects.
Brunelle’s Camp Out! offers advice on everything from nature crafts and weather watching to games and recipese. Cooking on a Stick by Linda White (Gibbs Smith, 2000) is filled with campout recipes kids can help prep and make.
Best of all, it’s an easy way to get back to nature, build memories, and learn new skills that can keep expanding with experience. Camping can then help keep vacations affordable and adventurous.
Older children can create a nature journal and see how many things they can find or spot outside.

Setting Up Camp
Families without a tent or wanting something sturdier can book a camper cabin. These rustic state park cabins usually have bunks insides, possible electricity and firepits and a picnic table outside. They book up fast, so planning ahead is essential.
"The backyard is a great way to start," says Lynn Brunelle, author of Camp Out! The Ultimate Kids' Guide (Workman Publishing, 2007) and mother of two children. "You're out of your box, so to speak [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the kids love the novelty of it. You have the camping experience with the comfort of home right there."
Anyone who doesn't have a backyard for camping can check with city or county parks for places that welcome campers. Setting up a tent or sleeping fort on a balcony or porch is another option.
One of the best nocturnal wonders (beyond fireflies) is the stars. Seasonal constellation reports can be found at EarthSky.org and libraries have books to explain the legends that inspired constellations.
It's helpful to team up with other families, if possible, to share equipment as well as talents, whether it's recognizing the hoot of a owl or making the best shadow animals with a flashlight on the side of the tent.
Anyone who needs inspiration — and a deadline — to try out camping with the kids or independently should considering jumping in with National Wildlife Federation’s Great American Backyard Campout every June. It has drawn more than 40,000 families to its past events with camaraderie and a load of good advice.
