The Channel Islands were the only part of Britain to fall into German hands and over five years of occupation Hitler fortified Jersey with massive gun emplacements and a huge network of defensive beach walls and bunkers. He also built an extensive network of underground tunnels which was used as a military hospital to deal with causalities should Britain decide to counter attack.
Until 1204 the Channel Islands belonged to France. They were part of the Duchy of Normandy. However, from here on their tranquility vanished as a result of disagreements between England and France and in the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1259 the King of France gave up claim to the Channel Islands.
In 2001 the tunnels became the home of a superb exhibition which tells the stories of the islanders and foreign prisoners who were forced to build the tunnels. More than 5 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 slave labourers were brought over to Jersey from a number of European countries. The tunnels are a work of engineering genius. The exhibition also illustrates how families survived the difficult years of occupation.
Channel Islands – What to See in JerseyCapital City of Jersey, Saint Helier A bustling city with excellent shopping and some historic harbours. Visit Liberation Square, named in 1995 to commemorate 50 years since the end of the Occupation. At this place on 9th May, 1945, advance parties from the Royal Navy and the British Army liberated Jersey from nearly five years of occupation by German forces. The Central Market [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in Beresford Street, is an indoor market which opened in 1882. It is an official Site of Special Interest. It features Victorian architecture including cast iron structures and an ornamental fountain in the centre. There are stalls selling flowers, fruit, and vegetables, as well as small shops and cafés.Elizabeth Castle. The castle is built on a small rocky island in St Aubin's Bay; it defended Jersey from invaders for more than 300 years. It is a perfect place to spend a day exploring Jersey's history. Work began on the castle in the 1590s and it was home to Sir Walter Raleigh while he was Governor of Jersey. The future King Charles II sought refuge at Elizabeth Castle during the English Civil War. The castle is accessible at low tide by foot or the castle ferry which will transport you across the bay to and from the castle. It is easy to reach from the city centre as it is located in the same bay.The Tapestry Museum. The Occupation Tapestry Museum at New North Quay was created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation. This is a fascinating exhibition. It consists of 12 panels and tells the story of the German Occupation in World War II. Each one of the panels was stitched by one of the twelve parishes on the Island and took seven years to make. The images on which the design was based were mostly black and white photographs taken during the Occupation. Some are sad [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some are funny, but all are interesting.Places of Interest Outside of Saint HelierMont Orgueil Castle. Also Known as Gory Castle, building began in1204. The castle was the primary defence of the island until gunpowder came along which would have made it vulnerable to attack from a nearby hill, Mont Saint Nicholas, which overlooks the castle. The castle is huge and jagged cliffs and the sea protect it from all sides. But there were many attacks on it over the centuries. The French conquered it in 1461 and stayed for seven years and, quite some time later, the Germans used the castle to provide observation towers.Jersey - La Hougue Bie. This Neolithic burial mound dates back more then 5,000 years. It is one of the best preserved remnants of the Neolithic period in Western Europe but was was not discovere
