Erik Stolhanske cleverly explains his adventures in the world of sperm doctors as he and his wife are trying to conceive. His delivery is priceless, especially when describing your run-of-the-mill institution versus your state-of-the-art Beverly Hills locale, where a privacy room becomes a veritable man cave, HDTV, wet bar and all.
The Final Word on Broken Lizard Stands Up DVD
The DVD has a handful of extras, namely some backstage outtakes, and an additional sketch. Nothing to write home about.
Fans of the group may enjoy the last segment where all five members come onto the stage, recounting how they all met (at Colgate University in upstate New York.) Once again this could have been a funny moment, but ends up dry as a twig.
In a move that may indicate the editors of this concert show may have saved the best for last, two of the funnier members of the troupe (at least in this case) come on to relate their own tales of woe, in a much better tone.
What to Expect in Broken Lizard Stands Up DVD
Non-Broken Lizard fans need not apply.
Though it seems like a great idea to put a comedy troop on stage for giggles and chuckles [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much of the crass and scatological humor found within this DVD falls flat most of the time, with very few exceptions.
Had more of this concert show been better scripted and/or been composed of bona fide skits, there might really have been something here. As it turns out, these guys are funnier as a whole than broken down in individual stand-up routines.
The boys are all here, and do perform some mildly amusing skits between their individual sets. Diminutive comic Steve Lemme opens up the show, discussing his teenage obsession with masturbation and the lovely and colorful anecdotes relating to such.
The seemingly jolly Kevin Heffernan comes on next, but takes a different approach than his peers, and takes the easy route with fans by revisiting his embarrassing moments on film, through the past Broken Lizard flicks, namely Super Troopers. Sadly, given that the audience (and fans at home) are more than familiar with these antics [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the bit seems somewhat used, and falls just as flat as his predecessors.
Folks [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this isn't Eddie Murphy's Delirious. It's unlikely to go down
This is followed by a terrible spoof of Britain's Got Talent, with Kevin Heffernan sporting a wig and doing his worst, oversexed impression of Susan Boyle, playing her as a timid yet sex-starved villager. The bit feels weak and flat, given all the jokes made about the singer in the past year.
A few moments stand out on Stands Up (no pun intended), namely an anecdote by Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme about their love for the late great Patrick Swayze (they call him P-Swayz) who they had a chance to meet on two occasions. While not funny "ha ha", it's a sweet enough story most of us can relate to, in terms of being starstruck. The actor's recent passing adds emotional weight to this tale, and makes for a nice break in an otherwise blah concert film.
Finally, Jay Chandrasekar comes on to discuss his love of weed, and how he found himself in Willie Nelson's trailer having trouble keeping up with the country singer while on the set of Dukes of Hazzard (which Chandrasekar directed.) Easily the funniest of the group with the best, easygoing delivery style, Chandrasekar successfully ends the show on a great note, giving you the impression the concert as a whole was hilarious. If to Look For on Stands Up
Paul Soter, dressed in a loud green t-shirt you'd just as easily find on Sheldon Cooper from the Big Bang Theory, discusses the perils of marriage, by recounting a story in which he got grief over his wife dreaming of his imaginary infidelity. A few laughs are to be had in this relatable story (to any married viewers, naturally), all the same the audience seems to laugh out of simple fan respect.
