Culloden, Last Battle Fought on British Soil
Flora MacDonald's Grave, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Bonnie Prince Charlie
Using metal detector survey, geophysical survey, a small amount of excavation and with reference to historical accounts and maps of Culloden on the day of the conflict, the team from the University of Glasgow were able to confirm that the field of battle was larger than had previously been thought.
New Light Shed on the Battle of Culloden
Culloden: The History of the Last Clan Battle is published by Pen & Sword Military, with all royalties from the sale of the book being donated to the Erskine Hospital (near Glasgow, Scotland) for ex-servicemen and women.
Elspeth Masson and Jill Harden provide an informative,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fascinating and sometimes tragi-comic description of the changing face of Culloden Moor in the 250 years since the battle.
The resulting information has been used in the displays in the new visitor centre at Culloden, offering much fascinating new information on the battle and the men who fought in it.
This scholarly and very readable book rounds off the picture with chapters from other authorities on the Jacobite period. These include Christopher Duffy and Daniel Szechi and topics covered are an overview of the '45, information on both the Jacobite and Government armies, contemporary maps and plans of the battle, the aftermath of the '45 and its overall significance.
Metal detector survey helped find debris such as grapeshot, musket and pistol balls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], uniform buttons, coins, belt and shoe buckles. The concentration of shot and bullets in particular helped plot where the fighting was at its most intense, changing previous ideas about this and bringing the scene of the most vicious action closer to the Well of the Dead and the new visitor centre.
One of several coins turned up by the metal detector survey is a German one dated 1752, six years after the Battle of Culloden was fought. On the evidence that British soldiers were on active service in continental Europe at this time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tony Pollard speculates that this may have been dropped by a Redcoat soldier stationed at nearby Fort George. Perhaps he was visiting the battlefield because he himself had fought there, or was paying his respects to a comrade who had.
Tangible Reminders of the Men Who Fought and Fell at Culloden
Dr Tony Pollard is the director of the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. He has carried out battlefield archaeology in the UK, Africa and South America. He and his team's examination of Culloden Battlefield near Inverness, where Bonnie Prince Charlie and his Jacobites sustained their final defeat, has brought fresh and forensic evidence to bear on the study of this last battle fought on British soil.
Two of the most moving discoveries made by the GUARD team come from opposite sides of the conflict. One, illustrated in the book, is a pewter cross, most likely an amulet worn by a Jacobite soldier and lost or torn off in the heat of battle.

Other Contributors to Culloden: The History and Archaeology of the Last Clan Battle
Prior to the construction of the new visitor centre at Culloden Battlefield near Inverness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the National Trust for Scotland commissioned what was to become the Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow (GUARD) to make a thorough archaeological examination of the site. This took place in the Spring of 2005.
