Einstein expressed what many have felt after he visited Spinoza’s earlier house in Rijnsburg on November 2, 1920, following which he wrote a poem honoring the philosopher. Many of those who come to commune with Spinoza at the house in The Hague today must certainly resonate with the lines Einstein wrote: "How much do I love that noble man, more than I could say with words."
Standing outside the Spinozahuis, undistinguished from the other canal houses on this street, the visitor pauses in silence and ponders not only the significance but the compelling humanity of this singular individual. Such is the example of Spinoza’s own life, one of unsurpassed humility and virtue, that he remains not only an inspiration and guide to ethical living, but the object of the deepest devotion, even love, from those who have studied him.
Situated on the Paviljoensgracht in The Hague, only a small brass plaque announces its historic significance. If not for the bronze statue of the philosopher in the meridian that divides the street into two lanes, it would be easy to miss. While today it houses a museum, viewings of the inside must be booked in advance. It is not to view Spinoza’s meager worldly possessions, though, that pilgrims make their way to this small landmark.
In the first work, Spinoza attacked superstition,Supra TK Society Shoes, organized religion, and the veracity of claims made in the Bible, casting doubt on Divine Revelation and opening himself up to accusations of heresy. In the second book, he set about to prove the existence of God, but in such a way as to provoke accusations of atheism. In his time, Spinoza was reviled as a monster and a heretic.
