ailing alternator, head gasket, and muffler are always unwelcome. The same is true for a clogged fuel injector, malfunctioning water pump, and a broken timing belt. Replacing these parts is usually expensive and inconvenient. In the case of a broken timing belt, the cost soars because the valves may become damaged, making your engine all but useless. But these components pale in comparison to your transmission. A transmission is one of the most expensive assemblies to overhaul or replace.
Many problems that affect the tranny start small, and worsen with time. This is a compelling reason to periodically inspect the assembly for leaks and other issues. When you notice signs of trouble, identify the cause quickly so you can have them resolved. This article will provide a few tips for diagnosing problems before they cause your transmission to deteriorate.
Checking For Fluid Leaks
Your transmission is designed with several seals and gaskets that prevent fluid from leaking. Unfortunately, they deteriorate with time and thousands of miles of use. This is a serious problem. In a way, this assembly is similar to your engine in that it needs fluid in order to operate properly. Heat builds during operation, and friction between the moving parts poses an issue. The fluid provides lubrication so these parts avoid tearing each other apart. For this reason, a leak can lead to damage - expensive damage.
When the fluid level is low [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you'll notice the assembly has trouble finding and engaging the right gear. It will do so effectively, but it hesitates. If a leak has caused the level to drop significantly, you may not even be able to drive your car.
The easiest way to check for leaking fluid is to look at the ground underneath the assembly. If you see a few drops, check the level immediately. Add more fluid if the level is low. If you see more than a few drops on the ground, replenish the level and have a mechanic find and fix the leak as soon as possible.
Pulling Fault Codes
During operation, problems are noted and recorded in the memory of your car's powertrain control module (PCM). Each problem is assigned a specific trouble code that provides clues regarding the issue. When you take your vehicle to a repair garage, the mechanic will pull these codes to help diagnose the problem. You can do the same at home.
Many auto supply stores - both online and off - sell OBD-II trouble code scanners (they cost as little as $30). Such scanners can connect to your PCM [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and pull codes from the computer's memory. While repair work on your transmission should be left to a capable, experienced auto technician, having the codes provides insight regarding the problems you're experiencing.
Common Indications Of Trouble
There are several signs your transmission is on the verge of failing. As noted earlier, you may notice a marked sluggishness when the assembly tries to shift gears. This is often due to low fluid; the problem can usually be resolved before an overhaul is necessary. More problematic, you may feel a jerk or shake when the assembly finds the right gear. Normally, the shift should be practically unnoticeable.
You may also hear a high-pitched whine coming from beneath the floorboards. This can occur if the teeth in the gears break off. In most cases, this problem is expensive to fix because the mechanic needs to lift the transmission from the car to access the gears.
The average lifespan of a transmission is between 100,000 and 150 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 miles. Thus, you can expect to need a replacement within ten years. Most experts will recommend having the assembly replaced rather than having it overhauled since the time and work involved with the latter approach is substantial. The entire job will likely cost between $1,500 and $3,000 depending on your location and the make and model of your vehicle.
