Alien 3 (1992) - The scenery in this film is typical of what is usually seen in Alien films - dark, wet and secluded. The characters are all prisoners, which could have been an interesting concept but it seems under utilized. David Fincher as a director does a great job working the story and the suspense. Not a bad film but it suffers from an over use of flat characters and bad CGI. A man in an Alien suit comes off much more tangible than effects that look like they have been pulled straight out of a video game. 3/5
Untitled Alien Prequel (2011/2012) - Currently the film is on the fourth draft of the script and the bugs are being worked out. This film will mark the return of original director Ridley Scott (Gladiator. Robin Hood) and hopefully the return of a darker and more looming Alien film. The film follows a crew who touch down on an unknown planet in response to a distress call, there is no crew to be found and it becomes apparent that the distress signal was actually a warning. The film will
Aliens (1986) - Debatably one of the best film sequels of all time. Not exactly a horror movie, although some of those elements are present. James Cameron uses the Alien canon to build a sci/action/horror hybrid. The movie reinforces the the theme of women as strong characters which was present in the original. The male characters like Bill Paxton's character, the general [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the the company representative are helpless puppies compared to Weaver's character of Ripley. Ripley is not only our hero [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but also the smartest person on the entire crew. This notion of empowering women is odd, however [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as their seems to be an exaggerated motif of fertility as grotesque and dismissible throughout the film. This movie has laughs, action, scares and some pretty heavy themes behind it. 4/5
The Alien films have always been there to serve as the prime example for science fiction films. Some exaggerate the sci-fi elements more than others where some don't feature it much at all. Some focus on utilizing action to engage the audience where others work suspense to have its viewers gripping the seats. The most recent film in the franchise (not counting either of the AVP films) came out 13 years ago so it can be difficult to remember what the films were like. With the announcement of a prequel maybe it is time to look back and see how each film fairs.
Alien (1979) - Some might describe this movie as a throwback to early haunted house films. It's dark, influential and suspenseful. The film is reminiscent of Jaws in the way you don't see the alien very much until further into the movie. The creature lurks behind the corners of the dank spaceship, creating a constant sense of unease that really helps play up the scares. The typical horror staples are here - blood, jump scenes and plot twists. The movie is a bit dated and some of the editing is questionable but it still remains a sci-fi classic. 4/5
Alien Resurrection (1997) - Horrible. Horrible. Horrible. A gruesome mess of bad acting and weird plot. It's no wonder the franchise died after this film. After seeing this movie roughly four times - it's still over the top and ridiculous. We have no characters to relate to, no horror staples, no good scares, no jaw dropping action and absolutely no suspense. Everything to love about the Alien movies is simply punched in the face and thrown out the window. 2/5
