Triclosan remains on the skin long after the handwashing or toothbrushing activity has ended, increasing exposure. It is readily absorbed, and has even been found in human breast milk (Adolfsson). It interferes with normal thyroid hormone production, and a study found that it lowers body temperature and causes a "non-specific depressant effect on the central nervous system" of mice (Glazer).
In a review of twenty-seven studies [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], antibacterial soaps were not found to be any more effective at preventing infectious illness or even reducing bacteria on the hands than washing with plain soap and water (Aiello). Antibacterial soaps were designed to fight bacteria. According to Consumer Reports Health.org, "Antibacterial soaps do not kill viruses." (2009). Furthermore, the use of antibacterial products may create "super bugs" - bacteria that have developed immunity to antibiotics.
The brand of soap is not as important as washing your hands the right way. Wash your hands often. Wash them long enough. Lather up your hands with either liquid or bar soap [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], getting between the fingers, under the fingernails, the tops and backs of both hands and slightly up the wrist. Triclosan, Found in Many Antibacterial Products, May Be Harmful To Your Health
Triclosan's Harmful Effect On the Environment
Triclosan kills several types of algae. Triclosan affects fish, causing fin defects and infertility. Many countries have restricted its use for consumer products, and banned the use of triclosan for items that come into contact with food.
Antibacterial Soaps Do Not Kill Cold or Flu Germs
Triclosan is found in waste water, rivers and lakes anywhere antibiotic products are marketed. While it hasn't been found to be toxic, the EPA's draft assessment says it is "suspected to be" contaminated with dioxins, which are very toxic. Dioxins cause a weakened immune system, infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, altered sex hormones, and cancer. When researchers added triclosan to river water and exposed it to ultraviolet light, the triclosan was converted to dioxin in the water (Glazer).
There comes a time when clean is just too-clean! The overuse of antibacterial products has been linked to the rise in allergies. Studies which found that children raised on farms had fewer cases of allergies, eczema and asthma compared to children raised in cleaner environments, suggest that children need to be exposed to a certain amount of dirt and bacteria in order to develop healthy immunities.
Triclosan is the most common ingredient in antibacterial soaps and products. It has been used in hospitals for some time, but in the past ten years products that contain this chemical pesticide have been targeted for consumers, although there is little proof of its effectiveness. Through an odd loophole, when triclosan is used to disinfect things, it is registered by the Environmental Protection Agency, but when it is for human use, it is regulated by the Food and Drug Administration!

With flu season upon us once again, maybe it's time to head out and stock up on antibacterial soaps and lotions. Now there's even antibacterial toothpastes, deodorants, cosmetics, kitchenware, computer keyboards, clothes [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], children's toys, and more! Are these products safe? How helpful are antibacterial soaps, and does the benefit outweigh the risk?
