In order to avoid drowning accidents while camping it is vitally important to:
31.0% drownings occurred while in natural water7.2% drowned following a fall into natural water90% of drownings are in freshwater (rivers, lakes and pools) 10% in seawater.
While educational efforts helped reduce the drowning toll in New Zealand, on a per capita basis, drowning incidents are still twice that of Australia (Report, 2009). The Red Cross has made considerable inroads and reduced drowning deaths and near-fatalities through their national educational programs in Canada and the USA, but more remains to be done.
A study conducted in 2008 by the Lifesaving Society in Toronto, Canada found that 90% of drowning victims in the province of Ontario were not wearing life jackets when they drowned and that 80% of those drowning victims were men. In fact [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Canada-wide, drowning is the third leading cause of accidental deaths [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the group at highest risk being young men between 18 and 34 years old. There has been an urgent call for legislative attention to these sad statistics, particularly with a view to making the wearing of personal flotation devices [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as life vests, mandatory.
In many countries, drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under 12 years old. For example, in the United States, it is the second leading cause of death (after motor vehicle crashes) in children 12 and younger. (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).
The statistics on drowning cases in the US from 1999 to 2006 illustrate the importance of prevention when camping near open waters:
In most countries of the world, drowning accidents are still a major concern for governments, particularly drowning deaths associated with boating and camping. For example, the year June 2008 to June 2009 was considered a ‘horror’ year for drowning deaths, which claimed 302 Australian lives. The urgency created by the 16% increase in drowning deaths over the previous year has prompted demands for increased parental awareness, increased accent on water safety and boating education, and good sense when swimming in rivers, lakes and dams.
How to Avoid Drowning Accidents While Camping
Maintain full, undivided attention on children at all times. Children are naturally attracted to water and have no fears or sense of consequence.Avoid drinking alcohol or indulging in drugs while around water and especially when handling watercraft and/or responsible for children.Learn how to swim and at the very least, how to float.Learn basic water rescue and life support.Discourage all rough-housing and dangerous play around water, especially around diving equipment, watercraft, docks and rock ledges. There is never a good excuse for reckless behavior.Avoid swimming alone or in darkness and swim only in areas where adequate supervision is present (i.e. a trained and certified Lifeguard). Cold, shock, physical exhaustion, illness (heart attack, stroke) and injury can incapacitate a person in a matter of minutes and requires competent and immediate attention.Avoid swimming in very cold waters or in areas where the risks of undercurrents are unknown or unpredictable. Be aware that currents are particularly deceiving; they can appear weaker then they actually are. Pay attention to the local weather conditions and tide warnings.Ensure watercraft are reliable, properly loaded and that fully functional emergency equipment is onboard without exception. When participating in water sports such as canoeing, sailing or surfing, wear a properly fitted lifejacket or flotation device. Ensure appropriate clothing and equipment is worn in order to avoid having clothing and equipment snagging or otherwise preventing easy surfacing.Enjoy water activities within your personal limits and physical abilities; turbulent or fast waters, undertows, waves, rip currents and eddies are all unpredictable and can quickl
