Using Film to Reach Out to Others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Suite 101: You have already gotten a lot of feedback from the To Save A Life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what has been the most meaningful/inspirational to you?
In To Save a Life, popular Jake struggles with the death of his friend, and he finds some help in the church. He also finds more problems in the church. In an email interview,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], director Brian Baugh talks about the film and the pros and cons of creating movies that deal with harsh realities yet offer hope and inspiration to viewers.
BB: In reading and hearing the response to the film it is truly stunning just how many young people are hurting out there. Obviously, we made the film because we knew students had problems and we wanted to offer some hope, but when you hear all of the stories it is overwhelming at times. It makes me want to continue to do my little part to help this generation of youth.
Probably my biggest lessons were with the Christian audience. The lessons are too much to put in writing. Primarily I was often astounded as to just how opinionated and full of expectations a certain (and thankfully small) portion of the Christian audience can be. Ironically we got some of our most cutting reviews from this crowd. Fascinating.
BB: Some of the most meaningful stories to me were the more subtle comments from students who were touched by the movie who didn’t necessarily connect with the spiritual themes. I never was interested in making a movie for a small niche Christian audience. I felt it one of my biggest challenges was to try and make this story accessible to as wide an audience as possible and have it work on several different levels. So if one was interested in the spiritual themes they were there and powerful, but at the same time they were natural and organic to the story. That way, if a viewer didn’t have an interest in the spiritual elements, they could still enjoy the film and still be impacted by the universal themes. This was very difficult to pull off and is achieved on a relative continuum. So it’s meaningful to me when there are hints that it worked on those different levels and is relevant to people no matter what spiritual views they have.

Suite 101: How has this film changed you personally and professionally?
Christian Film or Secular Film?
Re
So more than changing me, it has inspired me to continue on the path that I’m on. To try and find entertaining and relevant ways to tell stories that offer hope to as many people as possible.
BB: I believe that the producers and financiers of ‘religious based content’ (or whatever you call it) need to be brave enough to put the emphasis on the story and let the messages and themes that are so important to them emerge naturally from that story. I believe when that happens audiences will show up. They are coming for a movie, for a story, and not an agenda or message. Large audiences have come for hundreds of years to Handel’s Messiah, Les Miserables,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Rembrant’s paintings and they all have deeply religious themes. They are also some of the best in the world at their art. I don’t think a religious theme is the issue – it is the level of artistry. When the filmmaking is world class then I believe audiences will gladly show up and enjoy the themes as they are treated to a tale that sends them on a great ride.
