Overall Couples Retreat was funny and entertaining. It could be somewhat categorized as a chick flick but there are some scenes in which a husband or boyfriend could be entertained.
Married with Children - Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman play the ideal couple. They have two kids and a nice home and seem to genuinely love one another. They have their frustrations within the marriage but are seemingly satisfied with their choice of life partner in the film.The Uptight Husband - Jason Bateman and Kristin Bell play a young couple that is struggling with not being able to get pregnant. Bateman plays a husband who feels the need to micromanage ever aspect of their lives while Bell plays a wife who feels she is suffocating beneath her husband's demands for perfection. The four couples in the movie end up at the couples retreat after Bateman and Bell decide to evaluate whether they should stay married or go their separate ways.Together for the Children - Kristin Davis and Jon Favreau play a couple who are only together for the sake of their teenage daughter. They both have cheated on each other and they plan on splitting up once their daughter is grown.The Separated Man - Four couples are needed to obtain a discounted price at the resort and this is where Faison Love joins the cast. Love comes to the island with his twenty year old girlfriend and discovers that a middle aged man just can't keep up with a child. Love gets a surprise at the end of the film and gets a happy ending of sorts.Unexpected Plot Development

Although there are some serious moments in the film there are some very funny scenes. One in particular involving a small child and a toilet in a hardware store is guaranteed to get a laugh.
In the beginning of the movie viewers are given impressions about the couples and their relationships and it is easy to assume that these impressions will predict the characters actions throughout the movie. This is a false assumption. When the characters get to the island retreat we are able to see the inner workings of the marriages and the couples begin to learn more about one another. The most unpredicted transformation occurs in a particular couple whose marriage seems doomed for failure. This couple ends up strong and loving by the end of the movie when they realize they do love each other after all.
